Things To Do

You can kick back and take in all the wonder of the island, or get pumped up and go on adventures. We recommend both.

Around town

  • Explore Bar Harbor’s history and get to know the lay of the land with a walking tour, indicated by signs titled Museum in the Streets.
  • Check into a museum or gallery. Bar Harbor’s museums are small and focused. You can learn about Bar Harbor’s “Gilded Age,” the island’s Native American heritage, the Gulf of Maine’s unique ecosystems and species, and the natural wonder of Acadia National Park. Galleries include contemporary artists, Maine artists, and historic works.
  • For the culturally inclined, Bar Harbor offers two celebrated music festivals offering everything from string orchestras, through chamber music, to jazz. As for Bar Harbor nightlife, bars and clubs host a range of bands and solo artists that complete the musical mix. Improvisational comedy theater is available as well.
  • Bar Harbor shopping is another relaxing pastime.
  • Our shops are varied and enticing.
  • Check our calendar for art shows on the green, weekly band concerts, farmer’s markets, and other Bar Harbor and Island events.

By Land or Sea

Explore the area under your own steam, or let experienced islanders show you their environment.
  • Biking: Acadia National Park has routes for both the novice and experienced cyclist along the 55 miles of carriage trails that lace through it, and road biking includes the Cadillac Mountain Challenge.
  • Rock climbing: Strap on a harness and let one of our guiding companies show you the best spots to learn or polish your climbing; you will see the island from a whole new angle!
  • Tour time: For a different view, hop a bus or trolley tour and let someone else worry about driving for an hour or two. Local companies are experts in the wildlife and the history of the area.
  • Whale-watching and boat tours: Enjoy one of the many whale-watching trips leaving from Bar Harbor, a sunset cruise, a naturalist-led ride among the islands, an old-fashioned sail, or even a trip on a lobster boat.
  • Hiking and walking: There is the Shore Path trail,  a meadow walk,  mountain climbs, and paths along streams and lakes.
  • Kayak: Paddle on your own or in the company of Registered Maine Guides and explore Mount Desert Island’s dramatic coastline in search of seals, seabirds and an intimate a connection with the ocean.
Bar Harbor offers a whole slew of answers to the couch potato blues and the stress of work. Do as much or as little as you wish, or even have someone else do the work for you! Whatever you end up doing, novice or old hand, chances are you’ll want to do it again and again, and again. . .

"There are moments in one’s life that appear at first to be a bit unplanned, spontaneous, where one is pulled to something quite out of the ordinary and out of one’s comfort zone. Yet days, sometimes months, even years later, one finds that moment to be a transformational point in one’s life. A few summers ago I had traveled across the country to visit some dear relatives who had been vacationing in Maine. At that point I had been newer in my yoga practice, was a bit shy and even a bit self-conscious, yet I was drawn to try a class that I had seen advertised about a sunset yoga class on top of Cadillac Mountain. That decision to take that class was a pivotal point in my life,
watching the sunset as I practiced yoga atop a beautiful mountain in one of our nation’s magnificent national parks changed my life’s path forever."

SAIL ACADIA: DOWNEAST FRIENDSHIP SLOOP CHARTERS

Join us aboard one of our traditional Friendship Sloops for an unforgettable sail along the Maine coast.  Friendship Sloops are emblematic of Maine's maritime heritage, and were once used for lobster fishing under sail.  The historic Alice E. (1899) is the oldest Friendship Sloop still sailing, and now departs daily from quiet Southwest Harbor.  The Helen Brooks was built during the Friendship Sloop revival of the 1960s and 70s, and now departs from Northeast Harbor.  Both villages are less than 25 minutes from Bar Harbor.
