11:00AMb—HISTORIC TOUR-The Kedge
The Kedge, 112 West Street, Bar Harbor
The Kedge, originally known as the Veazie Cottage, was built in 1870 by Doane of Boston for one of Maine's wealthiest families and is the oldest surviving summer cottage in Bar Harbor. In the Golden Age that saw the rise of the town to international prominence, it served as the clubhouse for the Mount Desert Reading Room, and in its rooms drank and dined some of the foremost men of the era - names like Vanderbilt, Astor, Morgan and Roosevelt can be found in its journals, along with two tycoons who later went down on the Titanic. Purchased in 1894 by Emily Robeson Price of Philadelphia, sister of President Grant's Secretary of the Navy, it remained in her family for seventy years. Her niece Ethel retained noted architect Fred Savage to apply his magic touches to the house in 1916; it was one of his final residential projects and his work is notable throughout. The house remains essentially a combination of the fine Doane and Savage designs, with very little modernization. The drawing room floor, with its original multi-colored floor, is particularly memorable. For more information contact Steven Raab, 207-288-3429.
