Desert Island's oldest families, and the Baker Island Lighthouse (built in 1855) was a beacon of welcome and safety for seafarers heading into Frenchman's Bay. Today, Acadia National Park counts Bakers Island among its many wondrous treasures. Join local artists for a special exhibit celebrating Baker Island's timeless presence in Acadia.

The Wild Gardens of Acadia celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2011. Created and maintained by volunteers, the Gardens offer park visitor an award-winning microcosm of Acadia's uniquely varied plant communities in a serene brookside setting. Glacial effects and a fortuitous location gave Mount Desert Island a broad range of ecosystems—from subalpine to peat bog to saltwater—within a very small area. In addition, a number of plant species reach the northern or southern limit of their range within Acadia National Park. The Wild Gardens of Acadia include over 400 plant species, all indigenous, in twelve sections such as mountain, heath, and seaside, designed to represent natural habitats found within Acadia National Park. Volunteer docents and informational brochures are available to help visitors discover the Gardens.

FLASH! is one of the largest community steelbands in the United States. Formed in 1990, members of FLASH! find as much joy in playing the steel drum (known as pan) as they do in sharing their music with enthusiastic audiences of all ages, from infants to centenarians. Historical talk and tour of the Gilded Age of Bar Harbor. The Cleftstone Manor, originally a summer cottage, was built by the How family of Boston in 1880. Charles T. How was an attorney and became the first real estate developer of Bar Harbor. Drop in for a 20 minute tour and learn more of Bar Harbor's rich history.

11:00AM—HISTORIC TOUR-The Kedge
The Kedge, 112 West Street, Bar Harbor, 207-288-3429
The Kedge, originally known as the Veazie Cottage, was built in 1870 by Doane of Boston for one of Maine's wealthiest families and is the oldest surviving summer cottage in Bar Harbor. In the Golden Age that saw the rise of the town to international prominence, it served as the clubhouse for the Mount Desert Reading Room, and in its rooms drank and dined some of the foremost men of the era - names like Vanderbilt, Astor, Morgan and Roosevelt can be found in its journals, along with two tycoons who later went down on the Titanic. Purchased in 1894 by Emily Robeson Price of Philadelphia, sister of President Grant's Secretary of the Navy, it remained in her family for seventy years. Her niece Ethel retained noted architect Fred Savage to apply his magic touches to the house in 1916; it was one of his final residential projects and his work is notable throughout. The house remains essentially a combination of the fine Doane and Savage designs, with very little modernization. The drawing room floor, with its original multi-colored floor, is particularly memorable.

11:00AM—HISTORIC TOUR-The Kedge
The Kedge, 112 West Street, Bar Harbor, 207-288-3429
The Kedge, originally known as the Veazie Cottage, was built in 1870 by Doane of Boston for one of Maine's wealthiest families and is the oldest surviving summer cottage in Bar Harbor. In the Golden Age that saw the rise of the town to international prominence, it served as the clubhouse for the Mount Desert Reading Room, and in its rooms drank and dined some of the foremost men of the era - names like Vanderbilt, Astor, Morgan and Roosevelt can be found in its journals, along with two tycoons who later went down on the Titanic. Purchased in 1894 by Emily Robeson Price of Philadelphia, sister of President Grant's Secretary of the Navy, it remained in her family for seventy years. Her niece Ethel retained noted architect Fred Savage to apply his magic touches to the house in 1916; it was one of his final residential projects and his work is notable throughout. The house remains essentially a combination of the fine Doane and Savage designs, with very little modernization. The drawing room floor, with its original multi-colored floor, is particularly memorable.

The Bar Harbor Bed and Breakfast Association presents An Afternoon of Chamber Music and Tea at the historic Mira Monte Inn in Bar Harbor. Savor afternoon tea and treats while enjoying a delightful concert of chamber music, performed by the Graebert Duo and Arthur Russell Strings program faculty. All proceeds of this concert will benefit Arthur Russell Strings, Mount Desert Island's chamber music program for young people. Ticket price $20.

The Graeber Duo are cellist Ryan Graebert and Bassoonist Marion Graebert. Ryan Graebert is originally from Bangor and holds music degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has performed numerous solo recitals, lecture recitals and chamber music performances. A faculty mentor at the Arthur Russell Strings program, he has also played cello with the Bar Harbor Summer Chorale Festival, as well as the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Marion Craebert, bassoonist, holds a music degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and is presently in the Masters of Music Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has performed in a wide variety of Music Festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival and the Festival de Musica de Santa Catarinain Jaragua do Sol, Brazil. Marion is also the Program Associate for the Arthur Russell Strings Camp. Violinist Nate Lesser will also be joining the faculty of Arthur Russell Strings this year as a violin mentor. Originally from Blue Hill, he is a three-time concert-master with the Maine All-State Orchestra. He also played with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra for 2 years and has toured to Los Angeles and Asia with the Oberlin Orchestra. He is currently a degree candidate at the Oberlin Conservatory.

Glacial effects and a fortuitous location gave Mount Desert Island a broad range of ecosystems—from subalpine to peat bog to saltwater—within a very small area. In addition, a number of plant species reach the northern or southern limit of their range within Acadia National Park. The Wild Gardens of Acadia include over 400 plant species, all indigenous, in twelve sections such as mountain, heath, and seaside, designed to represent natural habitats found within Acadia National Park. Volunteer docents and informational brochures are available to help visitors discover the Gardens.
