1:00PM-3:00PM - BOOK SIGNING - Lighthouses of Bar Harbor and the Acadia Region by Timothy Harrison
Bar Harbor Historical Society, 33 Ledgelawn Ave, Bar Harbor
With the exception of Mount Desert Island's Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, the lighthouses of Bar Harbor and the Acadia region are among the most remote and lesser-known lighthouses of Maine. As the vessel traffic changed in these areas in the early 1900s, some of these lighthouses were sold into private ownership while others became less important as aids to navigation. Since the structures were located on remote islands or in a highly restricted military installation, the photographs and historical firsthand memories of most of these lighthouses have remained elusive and seemingly lost in the dusty pages of time. Through vintage photographs, "Lighthouses of Bar Harbor and the Acadia Region" uncovers the history of these structures that kept watch over Maine's rocky coast. Timothy E. Harrison is the editor and publisher of Lighthouse Digest magazine and co-founder of the American Lighthouse Foundation, which he served as president of from 1994 through 2007. He is also the founder of the Museum of Lighthouse History, which in 2007 merged with the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland. As the author or coauthor of seven lighthouse books, he has given hundreds of lectures and dedicated his life to locating, documenting, and preserving lighthouse history for future generations. 112 West Street, Bar Harbor.
The Kedge, originally known as the Veazie Cottage, was built in 1870 by Doane of Boston for one of Maine's wealthiest families and is the oldest surviving summer cottage in Bar Harbor. In the Golden Age that saw the rise of the town to international prominence, it served as the clubhouse for the Mount Desert Reading Room, and in its rooms drank and dined some of the foremost men of the era - names like Vanderbilt, Astor, Morgan and Roosevelt can be found in its journals, along with two tycoons who later went down on the Titanic. Purchased in 1894 by Emily Robeson Price of Philadelphia, sister of President Grant's Secretary of the Navy, it remained in her family for seventy years. Her niece Ethel retained noted architect Fred Savage to apply his magic touches to the house in 1916; it was one of his final residential projects and his work is notable throughout. The house remains essentially a combination of the fine Doane and Savage designs, with very little modernization. The drawing room floor, with its original multi-colored floor, is particularly memorable. For more information contact Steven Raab, 207-288-3429.
